Open Burn Season

March 1 to May 30 is open burn season in Utah County. Open burning is a source of air pollution that is regulated by the Department of Environmental Quality. The following rules are in place to help regulate emissions and protect the air quality:
A fire truck parked in front of a fire.
  • Burn permits are required and must be obtained prior to burn. If you need to burn on a Saturday or Sunday, you must obtain the permit no later than Friday before 5 p.m. The quickest, and easiest way to obtain a permit, is to complete the application online. You may also complete the application over the phone at 801-536-4000. You must keep a copy of your permit with you at the burn site. Failure to obtain a permit may result in a fine.
  • Prior to burn, you must notify Orem Dispatch by phone at 801-229-7070, and Vineyard Town Offices by phone at 801-226-1929. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
  • Materials to be burned must be thoroughly dry with no trash, rubbish, tires, or oil included in the material to be burned, used to start fires, or used to keep fires burning.
  • Open burns must be supervised by a responsible person who has available, either on-site or by the local fire department, the means to suppress the burn.
